The IUMSC Site gives links to most of the important sections of the IUMSC Data Server. The What's New on the server section is updated to let users know about any major changes. It is worth checking this section every once in while to see if we have any surprises. The Locate Crystal Structure data section leads to the data files via a query based on crystallographic parameters, chemical formula, or a simple text search. If you have trouble finding your data, check the Instructions page. The Common Molecule Pages section has been designed for anyone with an interest in what a molecule looks like to take advantage of some of the graphics we have developed. To take full advantage of this server, you must be using a viewer which can read Java™ applets. The present version has been optimized to use the latest version of Netscape or Internet Explorer running on an IBM PC platform under Windows 2000/XP. To download the latest version of Mozilla Firefox or Netscape, please go to their sites. If your viewer is "Java™ enabled" you should be able to see a solid dodecahedron to the left of this paragraph which you can rotate by dragging the mouse in the applet box with the left button depressed. If you can see the applet with no problems you can take full advantage of the Java™ graphics implementation of the IUMSC server. The Morphology and mineralogy link leads to pages which make extensive use of the Java™ applets originally designed by John N. Huffman. and extensively modified by John C. Bollinger. Before you try to use the graphics interface to visualize crystallographic data on the IUMSC server, you should probably read the JaMM Instructions page. To find out more about the IUMSC, be sure to take a "virtual tour" of the laboratory from the Virtual laboratory tour link, and view activity in the lab using any of the several Web-Cams in place throughout the laboratory. The Useful Links page has all kinds of useful stuff, primarily for crystallographers and those who use crystallography. Other links will let you see the staff, download programs and write-ups, and examine the publications which have resulted from our laboratory. Finally, thanks to the Office of Information Technology (now incorporated into the University Information Technology Services) at Indiana University for the New Computing Initiatives Grant that allowed the implementation of the IUMSC Server. A special thanks also to John N. Huffman, who started at the Center for Innovative Computer Applications (CICA) at Indiana University and is now with the Advanced Visualization Laboratory. The IUMSC server was initiated as a class project while he was still a student at Purdue University, and he is responsible for the original Java applets. Other key individuals include Dr. John C. Bollinger in the IUMSC who is responsible for much of the locally written code (as well as overseeing day to day operation of the computer systems being used) and Dr. Maren Pink, also located in the IUMSC, We will always be indebted to Dr. William E. Streib and Dr. Kirsten Folting who are responsible for many of the structures on the server, and have also been instrumental in adding many structures from our archives. Finally, a thanks to the many undergraduate students who have participated over the years as C409 undergraduate research students. |
